9/25/2009 I love this place. This place is one of the reasons why I love living in BKLN. I celebrated a birthday here a few years ago; I celebrated my new job a few months ago; I've come here after going to a show at BAM; and I've come here at times just because I like it. I like the beautiful 40-foot long curvaceous cherry wood bar (in fact, I prefer to sit at the bar); I like the modern interior design which is sleek and warm at the same time. I like the calm of the backyard garden. I like the attention to details put by the owners, from the wine list, to the menu, to the decor.

This is, first and foremost, a wine bar. As such, they have one of the best wine selection you can find in NYC. Moreover, their choice of certain less known but excellent wines (for example Cannonau from Sardinia) shows how carefully the list has been put together. On the wine list you will find sure winners and more daring proposals. The list is composed of about 200 wines from around the world, mainly from small producers. About 30 wines are offered by the glass, or as tasting flights if you're feeling playful (3 wines, 3 pouring ounces each, $17).

Their beer list is also impressive: Aventinus, Maredsous, Whale's Tail Pale Ale, just to name a few I like.

The fact that this is a wine bar should not deter you from eating here. I wouldn't call the menu small, but very focused: the intent is to accompany the wine experience in a non-intrusive, yet assertive way. The changing menu focuses on seasonal, sustainable, and local produce. The charcuterie and cheese platters are always excellent; last time I was there VH and I got the Zamorano with quince, Robiola, and Greyson. The wild striped bass with fennel, orange, citrus, string beans, and olive was simply phenomenal! I noted the name of the chef, John Gibson, because all the dishes I tried at Stonehome have been fantastic: very flavorful and inventive; you will always find on the menu a dish you REALLY want to try (like elk venison!). This guy is going places.

The staff is extremely knowledgeable and friendly, always willing to suggest a pairing of wine with your food, or to fill your water glasses before you need to ask.

Keep in mind that this is a popular pre- and post-theater destination for nearby BAM goers, so it can get very busy any evening of the week.

I wish I was at Stonehome tonight...

Updated - 1/5/2010 I have been back for a couple of great meals since, but when New Year's came around again, we went back for more at Stonehome.

Once again, small bird (pheasant this time) kind of foiled the BF, but everything was great, the wine was great, everyone was super nice. The space is cozy. It's a casual fanciness that makes you really comfortable. Candian elk is yummy.

8/10/2010 I like the tucked-away yet convenient location, and the space is nicely decorated without being fussy. The long, wooden bar is an especially nice feature!

I had the sweet corn and goat cheese ravioli with roasted tomatoes and broccoli rabe, which I highly recommend. My boyfriend had the prix fixe pan-roasted chicken, which was only okay; I think it came with some kind of a hazelnut sauce which was kind of interesting but didn't really work. His cod fritter appetizer was pretty good, though, and the panna cotta dessert was very tasty - loved the berry topping! Next time I want to try a charcuterie and a cheese plate, because those sounded pretty tasty.

The wine menu has wines by the glass and bottle as well as a fairly wide array of tasting flights. If you're a novice like me who does not always know which varieties and labels of wine to order, the tasting flight option is a good one. You get three different, nearly-full glasses of wine within your chosen category, and it's fun to compare them with each other. I'm looking forward to trying the other categories.
