8/19/2010 3 photos 1 Check-in Here One frigid winter evening my friend Camila and I were on our way to meet my friend Alex for some dancing at "The Rub" at Southpaw. 11pm and freezing the line is around the block and we weren't about to wait two hours in the cold to get in. We opted for drinks and by Alex's suggestion, ended up at Cafe Steinhoff.
Dimly lit with a old tavern feel. Not dingy, musty or smelly at all, the space is divided in two by a wooden floor divider with glass panels on top. 3/4 of the space is separated for tables while the other 1/4 is for the extensive bar that spans the entire length of the restaurant.
When we were seated we asked our very knowledgeable server what their best fruity drink on the menu was. I cannot remember what the name of the drink he gave me was but I do remember that it was strong. I was very pleased :). He also offered us a menu and though skeptical because I had never had Austrian food before, Alex assured me it was excellent. I chose the Chicken Paprika sandwich which was a chicken cutlet on a very flat roll (I liked that) with a delicious mini salad on the side. I can even remember the flavor now.
Cafe Steinhof is usually packed on weekends and they don't take reservations. First come first serve. However, late night is a breeze in terms of getting a table. I'm planning to go here with my sister tomorrow night. Hopefully it wont be crowded.

7/11/2010 I love German/Austrian food, so of course I would love Steinhof. The restaurant is really small, dark and intimate. I dined here last year and just did not get a chance to Yelp about it till now.
It was a cold winter night. I had a glass of Pinot Noir and Wiener Schnitzel with parsley potatoes and cucumber salad. Everything was delicious. The schnitzel was cooked pretty well. I am a fan of veal more than the pork they had, but it was still tasty to me. I would compare them to Zum Schneider, but they are different in many ways.

6/22/2010 Loved the food here! If I lived any closer, this would be my local hang-out spot. Though I didn't stay at the bar, it looked like a chill place inside. We had dinner outside on a warm Friday evening. This is the closest that Park Slope gets to Hungarian food which I grew up on and it was delicious! All of it.
For appetizers we had the smoked trout which was served with potatoes and onions, and the red cabbage salad - with goat cheese and ham. My entree tasted fantastic: chicken paprikas! This is my childhood favorite meal and although I won't say it tasted exactly like grandma used to make, it was pretty damn good. We also tried 2 types of the snitzel and had the goulash. This I have to admit wasn't perfect but decent enough. Ok, so maybe I'd give them 4.5 stars. But, overall - happy.
