8/4/2010 My boyfriend's sister was visiting us, and she ate lunch at Mile End at least twice in the span of one week. She then took us for lunch one Saturday, and we saw why she was so smitten with the place.
Because it was Saturday, we had the weekend menu. I got the breakfast sandwich, and it was perfect. It was eggs, cheese, and canadian bacon (although it was thickly cut in slabs like regular bacon) on fresh, delicious bread, and it was just the right size of being hearty without being too big. I sampled the boyfriend's brisket sandwich as well, and it was yummy.
I definitely recommend!

8/14/2010 1 photo I spent four+ years in Montreal, and this restaurant takes me back. The smoked meat is true to the flavors of all the smoked meat that I had in Montreal, and it is something special and unique. Anybody in the area who has never tried this delicacy should stop by this restaurant.
Smoked meat, if you have never had it before, is very similar to Corned Beef when you first taste it. It is fatty and has the same loose consistency as corned beef, but you will detect that characteristic smoky flavor. The pickles, the mustard, and the simple way of serving the meat to you with a few slices of bread (platter style), is all consistent with how the original Schwartz's does it.
Does this meat live up to the standards of the grand-daddy's in Montreal? No, of course it doesn't. Is it delicious though? Absolutely. This place is special because it has brought something you can't find really anywhere but Montreal to New York City.

8/25/2010 I'm torn!
Do I write a rave review of this place, because they totally deserve it? Or do I ignore it, hoping no one else will discover it?
While headed elsewhere for lunch with two buddies, we passed "Delicatessen," and instantly agreed, Let's go!
The second we walked in, the savory aroma of smoked meats took over.
"What's that amazing smell?," We asked. "What is that?," pointing to a beautiful cut of beef on the butcher's block.
"Smoked Meat," she said dryly, surprised by our enthusiasm.
Followed by, "It's like Pastrami, but more fatty."
Sold.
Three of those please, two Pomme Frites, and three Six Points Ales, (my favorite local beer, from Red Hook).
Everything was delicious! Mouth wateringly good! Perfect fries, ice-cold beer, delicious sandwiches, and bland but good service.
I should have started with the interior, because it is so simple and elegant, we couldn't walk by without stopping.
The ambiance is very open and airy, with pressed plywood tables, and dim lamps extended from the walls on horizontal scissor hinges.
There is a semi-exposed kitchen and counter, and the entire front is open to the street. It has the same feeling of being in Cafe Gitane, or Cafe Habana in Nolita.
After a few bites of the simple smoked meat sandwich on Rye, with a bit of mustard, my friend said, "When it came, I thought it looked a little small." We all agreed and laughed, but on my third bite, I was wondering if I'd ever make it to the second half.
Needless to say, we were all very pleased, and more so, when the total bill amounted to about $60!
It might have been a better idea not to review Mile End, as they have maybe three tables and a handful of bar stools. I'm positive I will never get in again!
